Parked in front of my office today. I've seen a bunch of these weirdos since I got back to Austin last month. What's with the sudden surge in popularity?

All the coolness of a motorcycle with none of the coolness of a motorcycle.

Not sure
But they do a hell of a lot of damage when thrust into the backside of an Explorer, I can testify to that.

Exactly. I've seen so many in the last couple weeks, too.

I want to ride a motorcycle but I'm too much of a pussy to actually ride a motorcycle.
The only reason I would ever get onto one of these would be to attempt epic doughnuts. I feel like they probably have insane traction control / stability control / abs built into these things though.

These are really popular in the Ottawa-Gatineau region of Ontario — Can-Am Spyder . Maybe because of Bombardier's French connection. Mostly I see them driven by aging men, so maybe that's the demographic they're going after.

As I understand it, they can't get even the slightest bit loose.
I wonder if there's a fuse for that. :-)

I think part of it has to do with getting a Motorcycle license - you can take the test on one of these

I've ridden one, feels almost exactly like a snowmobile but on pavement.
Also it's about 100x less fun than a snowmobile cause you can't do this

A lot of people ride one of these because they don't feel they are "balanced enough" to stay on two wheels, and some ride these because they feel it's safer. I think they are hideous, but they are a lot of fun. They are like snow tubes. You rent them and have a blast, but you don't hear anyone bragging about how awesome their fancy snow tube is.

I'm sure that's the case. I've driven some crazy snowmobiles, but never one of these things.
